Larry Hurwitz passed away peacefully at his home on February 19, 2026 with his daughter Wendy and son-in-law George at his side. He was born in 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, to Theodor & Minnie (Cohen) Hurwitz. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1940.
Larry held many jobs early in life, including newspaper delivery boy, pharmacy soda jerk, salesman, and Good Humor driver, going on to purchase his first car with his earnings, a 1947 Chrysler, at the age of 15.
Larry met Deanna by happenstance and was immediately smitten. They married in 1957.
Larry joined the Detroit Police Department in 1961, moving up in the ranks and earning many commendations during his 20 years of service. He worked at City Car driving a big rig hauling new Chryslers from Detroit to Canada, at the same time. Early on, Larry and Deanna began purchasing rental properties in Detroit. They expanded their endeavors to Northern Michigan, with decades of commitment leading the family to a quieter life on Lake Charlevoix. He loved nothing more than hosting Sunday dinners with family, and the many relatives who came to visit. In retirement he spent a decade in Florida enjoying live music shows and cruises with Deanna, giving advice in the hot tub/pool, and giving treats to all the neighborhood dogs.
Larry appreciated hard work and common sense. He was no ordinary man. From epic entrepreneurial endeavors to fielding unfathomably comedic fiascos (which we can neither confirm nor deny), he lived each moment to the fullest. Larry will live on in his eccentric and brilliant wisdom imparted, and in the stories that are impossible to forget or to stop telling. He will be missed greatly, and as he would say “Thank you, ever so much,” for the time that he had.
Larry is survived by daughters Laurie Hurwitz of FL, Wendy (George) McKenney of East Jordan, his grandchildren and their spouses Kevin McNeil & Lisa Hankin of New York, Brian McNeil & Cristina Telleria of Seattle, Mark & Liz (Eddington) McKenney of Petoskey, Corey McKenney of Seattle, Rachael McKenney & Ken Page of Petoskey, his great-grandchildren, Jacob & Ilana Hankin-McNeil of New York, Joaquin & Anton McNeil of Seattle, two soon-to-be-born great-grandchildren he was so looking forward to meeting in May, sister-in-law Mary Krimmel, brother-in-law Bob Salomon, and many other family & friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife Deanna, his son Larry, his parents, and his beloved sister Lila Salomon. There will be a private service for family only, in respect of Larry’s final wishes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
